Early Works and Education - Chris Cooper
When I Studied at the Ontario College of Art (OCA), I learned very quickly the value and necessity of learning
to draw. Drawing is the basic grammar of all visual arts. Without an understanding of perspective, texture, grain,
tone, design, composition and the behavior of light, it would be almost impossible to illustrate one's ideas visually.
While at OCA I spent 10 to 12 hours a day drawing or painting. Three quarters of that time was spent drawing. I
chose nudes and animals as subjects. Animals due to the variety of textures and light events which occur on their
surfaces. The nudes I chose as all lines in nature exist on the human body, and the body is something we are all
intimately familiar with.
The following are examples of the early animal and nude studies.

These Works use the figure as subject. They are studies of light and its behaviour as well as perspective. Each
work is essentially a drawing, although sometimes I used paints over drawings, mixing media to push the ideas of how light works,
and how we understand what we see.
