While I was at OCA I studied landscape work with Franklin Arbuckle. It was with him that I first painted in Algoma. I fell in love with this part of Ontario immediately. Upon graduation, I moved into the forests of Algoma at Mile 711/2, Spruce Lake on the Algoma Central Railway (ACR). There I lived and painted for the next 13 years.
For the first 7 or 8 years in Algoma I did no studio work. All
of the drawings and paintings were done outside where I studied
the land and its nature in sketch form. I did this to learn to
take on larger cavases. On this page are examples of these
early studies in Algoma.
